Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions? We’ve got answers. Browse our most common questions about services, appointments, and vehicle care below.

Digital Vehicle Inspections (DVI’s)

What is a DVI?
A Digital Vehicle Inspection (DVI) is a detailed inspection where we document what we
find with photos, notes, and clear recommendations—so you can actually see what
we’re seeing.

Why do you use DVIs?
Because it eliminates guesswork and builds trust. Instead of vague advice, you get clear
documentation and a plan you can understand.

What’s included in a DVI?
Most DVIs include checks of brakes, tires, fluids, visible leaks, belts/hoses,
battery/charging (when applicable), suspension/steering, underbody, exhaust condition,
and other key safety and reliability items.

Will I receive photos?
Yes. When it helps you make a decision, we document concerns with photos and
explanations.

Do I have to approve everything you recommend?
No. We organize recommendations by priority so you can decide what to do now and
what to plan for.

Will you prioritize urgent items vs items that can wait?
Yes. We categorize items into Safety/Immediate, Soon/Preventive, and Monitor.
Does a DVI slow down my service?
Not usually. It often speeds things up because communication is clearer and approvals
are easier.

Diagnostics

What’s the difference between reading codes and diagnostics?

A code read points us to a system. Diagnostics is the testing process that confirms the
real root cause, so you don’t waste money replacing the wrong part.

Do you charge for diagnostics?

Yes. Diagnosis is skilled labor and requires specialized tools and testing. Proper
diagnosis saves money by preventing unnecessary repairs.

My check engine light is on—can I drive?
If the check engine light is flashing, you should stop driving as soon as it’s safe—this

can indicate a condition that may cause serious damage. If the light is solid, it’s often
drivable short-term, but you should schedule diagnosis soon.

How long does diagnostics take?
It depends. Some concerns are straightforward and can be diagnosed quickly.
Intermittent or complex issues can take longer. We’ll keep you informed and confirm
next steps before proceeding.

Will you start repairs without my approval?
No. We will contact you with findings and an estimate before any repair work begins.
Can you diagnose noises, vibrations, or intermittent issues?
Yes. These issues often require a structured process like a road test, inspection, and
data review to confirm the cause.

Oil Change

How often should I change my oil?
Many vehicles fall in the 5,000–7,500-mile range depending on oil type, vehicle, and
driving habits. Short trips, stop-and-go driving, and lots of idling can require shorter
intervals.

What oil do you use?
We use the correct oil type and specification for your vehicle. If you have a brand
preference, let us know and we’ll do our best to accommodate.

What’s included with an oil change?
A proper oil service includes replacing oil and filter plus basic checks like fluids, tire
condition/pressure, visible leaks, and resetting the maintenance reminder when
applicable.

I don’t drive much—do I still need oil changes?
Yes. Oil breaks down over time as well as mileage. Many drivers benefit from oil service
every 6–12 months depending on the vehicle and oil type.

Brakes

How do I know if I need brakes?

Common signs include squealing, grinding, vibration when braking, longer stopping
distances, pulling while braking, or a brake warning light.

What’s included in a brake service?
Depending on what your vehicle needs, brake service may include pads/shoes, rotor
inspection and replacement, brake hardware, and a full system safety check.

Do I need rotors if I’m doing pads?
Not always, but often. Rotors must be within spec and in good condition. Worn or
uneven rotors can cause vibration, noise, and premature pad wear.

Do you service brake fluid?
When appropriate, yes. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time. Servicing it can help
maintain braking performance and protect brake system components
.

Battery and Electrical

How long does a car battery usually last?
Most batteries last about 3–5 years depending on climate, driving habits, and electrical
demand.

My car won’t start—how do you figure out what it is?
We test the battery, starter, alternator/charging system, and related wiring to confirm the
cause instead of guessing.

What is a parasitic draw?
A parasitic draw happens when something continues using power after the vehicle is
off, causing the battery to drain. We can test for this and isolate the source.

Why do electrical issues take longer to diagnose?
Electrical concerns can be complex because symptoms don’t always point directly to
the root cause. Proper testing is the fastest way to get the correct fix.

A/C and Heat

My A/C isn’t cold—do I just need a recharge?
Sometimes, but refrigerant doesn’t get “used up.” If it’s low, there’s usually a leak. We
recommend finding and fixing the cause rather than repeatedly topping it off.

Why does my A/C work sometimes and not others?
Intermittent A/C issues can be caused by leaks, pressure sensors, compressor
problems, or electrical controls. Diagnosis confirms the root cause.

My heater smells sweet or fogs the windshield—should I be concerned?
That can indicate a coolant leak (like a heater core issue). It’s worth checking promptly.
Do you replace cabin air filters?
Yes. A clogged cabin filter can reduce airflow and affect comfort.

Cooling System

My car is overheating—what should I do?
Pull over safely, turn off the engine, and avoid driving while overheating. Overheating
can cause major engine damage.

Why is my coolant low?
Coolant should not disappear in a sealed system. Low coolant usually means a leak.
We pressure test and inspect to find the source.

Do I need a coolant flush?
Often, yes depending on your vehicle’s maintenance schedule and coolant type. Fresh
coolant helps prevent corrosion and protect cooling system components.

What’s included in cooling system service?
Service may include leak testing, coolant exchange, thermostat or water pump
replacement, radiator/hose repair, and verifying proper operating temperature.

Suspension

What are signs my suspension needs attention?
Common signs include clunking over bumps, wandering steering, uneven tire wear,
vibration, excessive bouncing, or the vehicle sitting unevenly.

Is suspension a safety issue?
It can be. Suspension affects handling, stability, and braking. We’ll tell you what’s urgent
versus what can be monitored.

Do you replace shocks, struts, control arms, ball joints, and tie rods?
Yes. We inspect the full system and recommend repairs based on what will actually
solve the problem.

Can suspension problems ruin tires?
Yes. Worn components often cause uneven wear, which can shorten tire life
significantly.

Exhaust

My exhaust is loud—what’s usually the cause?
Common causes include leaks, broken hangers, failing flex pipes, rusted sections, or
muffler damage.

Is an exhaust leak dangerous?
It can be—especially if fumes enter the cabin. If you smell exhaust inside the vehicle,
get it checked right away.

Can you diagnose catalytic converter issues?
Yes. We confirm the cause properly, since converter-related codes can also be triggered
by misfires, sensor issues, or exhaust leaks.

Do you repair or replace exhaust systems?
Yes. Depending on the issue, we may repair a section or replace components for a safe,
long-lasting fix.
